About A HAPPY ENDING

I want a happy ending.  By that, I would like to see my country continue to be what it has been… a country which can manage its issues, where people can be friends again after a presidential election, where people who come here for a visit, or to live, know how to be polite enough to not slam what we accept as perfectly normal, particularly when they know jack about our life, our culture, our ways, the things we like, the things we don’t like, and the things we think are normal, and want to import their own ideas and overlay them on our American way.

I happen to think that we should go ahead and live our lives in our culture, without being told how our culture should change by PC people who have never lived for any length of time in any other place.  I also happen to think that people who think that we should change should go live someplace else, where they don’t know the language, for 2 years, at least,  and then have that marvelous experience of coming back through Kennedy, or whatever other international airport they open that big door through, and sinking weak-kneed to kiss the ground of America.

Let’s just say: I do not have time, at this point in my life, to listen to people who think we should change America.  Changing America is not going to make anybody like us better, and it is just going to make those of us who hate themselves hate themselves more ….. I am sorry they hate where they are from and think it should change.  I am sorry, and I wish there were some place where they could go to and hate more purely.

I do not hate my country, and I do not despise my culture.  I cannot live in the South, so I live in New York City, which has put me in a most interesting situation — I love my country, but I cannot live there. I cannot make New York City be the South, so I have to learn to live here. I do not spit on it, nor do I deride it. It is where I have chosen to live, out of all the places I have lived.  I do not presume that New York City should change because I am here.   All the while, I know that I am an American, and I do not understand why anyone should come here to America and try to change what we have here just because they are here.  I also do not understand in the least why some American citizens think we should change things to make them more like the places those people left…

We have gotten this far without having people kill each other over religion.  We have almost gotten past the business about killing people who look different from us.  WHY SHOULD WE GO BACKWARDS JUST BECAUSE SOME BACKWARDS PEOPLE HAVE COME HERE?

One of the very few things I admire about France is their injunction against wearing religious garb. In that, I think they are right on.  If someone wants to walk around in a bag, they should do it in their house.

I am sick of being spit on because I walk around my own town dressed normally (I am not of the generation of 50-somethings who feel that exposing their breasts and butts will make them look younger… I grew up in a different place, and don’t see any point in advertising — that kind of dressing will not bring me the kind of attention I want, and I understand that, and, anyway, I do not feel any need to advertise.)  Just because I do not walk around dressed in a bag does not mean that I should be disrespected by people who are trying to bring their own racist, misogynist, sectarian problems into my country.  If they want to have things their way, they should build a closed, walled community somewhere in North Dakota, and become self-sufficient, and remove their blight from our sight.  WE SHOULD NOT HAVE TO BEND OVER BACKWARDS TO ALLOW THEM TO BRING THEIR HATRED AND MISOGYNY INTO OUR MIDST.
